Hamster Wheel

This video had me laughing out loud at work today.

I used to have a couple of hamsters and I've seen them do this more than once. :D

Collision Course

I just wanted to mention that I was facing a car coming at me in my lane this morning. I was beside a truck while we were cresting a hill on a four-lane highway. A car on the right side of the road had pulled out into my lane and was driving right at me. I breaked hard as did the truck beside me and came to a stop. The car then drove over the curb and pulled onto the lawn of a house. After they got out of the way, I drove on and watched them in my rear-view mirror. They then pulled back out into the road and proceeded to drive the wrong way again.

I keep wondering if they were from another country and thought that they were on the right side of the road or if they were just trying to go a few driveways up the road and decided that they didn't need to pull all the way out into the correct traveling lane.

The Island

Last night I dreamed....

I was with a group on a boat in the middle of the pacific when a hurricane moved in. A lot of people on the boat were lost at sea. I went overboard myself and tried to stay afloat with very large waves crashing on top of me. Some people were floating on inflatable rafts. I swam over to one and pulled myself on board.

After the storm passed, we were debating which way we should go. One man said that we needed to go north. Immediately afterwards, we stumble onto the island. Well, the part we stumbled onto wasn't an island. It was the body of a giant whale that had run a ground. There was even grass growing on top of parts of it. We all got out and walked along the top of the whale and found the land part of the island.

There was a house built with various tropical trees and plants surrounding it on the middle of the island. There were also a lot of wooden docks at various levels built around a cove nearby. Inside, there were people living including a girl named April. She brought us tea to drink but said that there wasn't much variety of things to drink. My immediate family was with me in the house.

We noticed a map on the wall and Floyd started studying it. I suggested that we build a dish and hook up a transmitter to contact people for a rescue. My dad said that was a good idea and he would start looking for parts to build it. Floyd was still looking at the map and determined what line of longitude we were on, but said that we could be at a number of various locations along it.

Floyd came into the kitchen the next morning and dad said something to make him mad so he went back out. The door opened again and we expected to see Floyd walk in again, but no one was there. The door opened fully and then shook as if someone had run into it. We knew that the house was haunted at that point.

While looking for parts for the transmitter, I found a mouse trap. After studying it some more, I gave it to my dad who found a diode inside. There was a boat in disrepair that was drydocked on the docks. I went out to it looking for something to help with the transmitter. A guy set up a ladder for me to climb up into the boat. Suddenly, I got chilled and scared. The guy holding the ladder was frozen and said a ghost was killing him. I yelled at the others for help but decided I better dive into the water to get away from the ghost.

While I was underwater, I saw a large white killer whale in the water with lampreys attached to it. I swam for shore fearing that the killer whale might attack me.

That night in the house, a bunch of people showed up to entertain us. We all danced and sang that evening. After they left, we wondered why we didn't ask them to send help to rescue us.

The next day, we somehow got word that slavers were coming to the island. We put most everyone in cages like we were going to sell them as slaves. I bowed in the middle of the floor with my hands up as a small woman came inside the house. Then everyone jumped out of the cages and took control of the woman and her men outside. We then took her boat and set out for home.

Then it was like a documentary. A film crew stayed on to study the water life of the area. There were sea otters, and other various fish. One large fish was dying settling on the sea floor. The otters liked gold and shiney things. A trick was to take red foil and form it around a coin and put both halves together, they would think they had a coin. There was also ice below the island with various air pockets that the otters would make nests out of.

And then I woke Up.

Nor'Easter

Friday night I kept hearing about all the snow were going to get this past weekend. It did snow some Friday night, but didn't amount to anything so I worked Saturday. Then Saturday night, it snowed again and then promptly melted during the day Sunday. As Sunday evening rolled around, it snowed yet again and stuck this time. This morning the ground was covered and the roads were white. I slipped and slid some walking out in it so I was a couple of hours late into work this morning.

I'm pretty conservative about driving on ice though. I just don't think it is worth it to crash my vehicle for an hour or two of working. I can always make up the work and time later.

I almost hit two deer that ran out in front of me on the way to work. One ran out right in front and I hit my brakes causing everything to slide forward in the truck. The road was wet but it wasn't icey in that particular spot. After stopping, I saw another deer come to the edge of the road a lot more hesitant to cross than its friend. He bounded across when he decided that I wasn't going to run into him. They were both fairly small deer and were really only the size of large dogs with very long legs. Deer in this area aren't usually very big, but we seem to have plenty of them in residental areas.

Zombie Ants

I read about a very interesting parasite, the Lancet Fluke.

It has a generation cycle as well as a change of hosts. The hosts range from snails, ants and larger mammals like goats. The interesting part of the cycle is when the ant ingest them. They grow inside the ant's abdomen and one of them will move into the ant's head. They affect the nervous system of the ant which causes the ant to change its behavior. These "Zombie Ants" will then climb up plants and attach themselves to leaves with their mandibles where they will be eaten by other animals such as goats.
