- Fought on March 23, 1862 at Winchester (Kernstown), VA. The Union forces only defeat of "Stonewall" Jackson.
- Fought on September 17, 1862 at Antietam, MD. The 8th Ohio saw intense action in their position at the center of battle, sometimes advancing at bayonet point, and earned the name "Gibralter Brigade" for successfully closing a gap in the lines and stoping the Confederate advance. Suffered heavy, 50%, casualties with a charge of entrenched Confederates in a sunken road called "Bloody Lane" after hours of fighting and scambling to resupply guns and ammo from the dead in the field. A monument to the 8th Ohio is at "Bloody Lane" today.
- Wounded (shot in the back) and recieved a disability discharge Dec. 2, 1862 in the days before Fredricksburg, while the two armies were in a weeks long standoff on opposite banks of the Rappahannock River under sniper fire.
